In Reel Deep identifies the correct practices small scale fisheries should be employing in a child-like manner, in which it aims to educate the younger generation to engage in these practices to help the depleting fish numbers due to overfishing. Home to 37% of the world’s marine species, Indonesia is the second-largest fishing nation with a population of 270 million eating more than three times as much fish and seafood as the global average.

Annually, Indonesia’s catch is over 7 million tons with most being domestically consumed with little exports. Raja Ampat, Indonesia was the chosen location for this game as they have implemented zero-tolerance laws for destructive fishing practices in areas surrounding starting in 2009. Raja Ampat is at the forefront of developing countries actively perusing effective management strategies to improve the state of the country’s fish stocks and coral marine areas to ultimately project a sustainable future.

This game highlights the urgent change of action for small-scale fisheries. In many places in Indonesia and around the world, fishing gives cultural identity and economic sustenance to these coastal communities. Moreover, implementing ethical practices within these communities educates the future generation to ascend into a sustainable future.

In Reel Deep is an educational fishing game set in the beautiful Raja Ampat in the West Papua province of Indonesia.

In Reel Deep is an interactive game for children, highlighting one of the United Nations’ seventeen Sustainable Development Goals. In this project Goal 14: Life Below Water is the focus, with overfishing being the overarching topic of this project.

In Reel Deep emphasises the effects of overfishing, specifically in small-scale fisheries as this industry is highly affected not only on a global level but domestically.

The Problem

User Scenarios.

The target audience for In Reel Deep are young children aged 8-12. In Reel Deep can be used as a parental or educational tool for students and adults.

User testing & results

The feedback from my peers was very helpful, the general consensuses were In Reel Deep had successful gameplay, the colour palette was a little dark for children some of the navigation was a bit back and forth, and importantly the message of overfishing was successfully communicated through In Reel Deep.

Improvements:

  1. Clean up the tool selection.

  2. Starting with the current colour palette and moving into a lighter palette to represent growth.
